cool! small files

I recently rediscovered the PNG file format. It makes small graphic files. Not as small as JPEG, but still much smaller than bitmaps and it doesn’t have the loss or artifacts of JPG. This is no real revelation, but the revelation was that my favorite graphics rendering program, POV-Ray, in the new version, can produce PNG files. That thought inspired me to start using it, and to convert my old files to PNG. That conversion made my collection shrink from 300Mb to 110 Mb! Needless to say, that’s a hefty improvement, and I will be staying with this for a while.

PNGs can actually be the same size (or smaller) as JPEG as long as you pick the right compression.
