Last night we spent much too long in stores, and not long enough in the house. We succeeded in spending a lot of money, and came home with a full load of door handles. I installed the deadbolt, securing the place from anyone who happened to have an old key.

schlage lever handle

Probably won’t install the rest of these until painting and such have happened.

computer woes

August 17th, 2004

Computer is working again. The power supply decided to not put out power any more. Annoyingly, this is not the first time this has happened. This was a new unit that died, having replaced another dead one only six months ago.

Thank you, Andrew, for loaning me your spare.

We got the house! We signed the papers and got the key on Friday, just before lunch. Been working on it (pulling up carpet mainly) all weekend.

Computer at home no worky, so more info coming later when I fix it.

After waiting way too long, something is happening. It’s been a month and a half of “maybe tomorrow something will happen” waiting.

Finally, the title for the house is clear. Now it’s just a matter of the mortgage bank getting papers to the title company, and the title company getting its papers back to us. Tentatively, closing is on Friday, at 11:00.

Am I happy about this? Yes. Am I betting the bank on this? No. I won’t do anything on the order of buying a refrigerator or mower until we close the deal.

no house

Still no house.

The title company in Houston is waiting for the county tax office in Dallas, for the house in Longview, being sold by the mortgage company in Houston.

And we don’t know when it will all be over.

I’m driving home from work, stopped at an intersection. Across the street, there’s a tobacco shop, with the usual (East Texas) clients: run-down pickups and Cadillacs the age of my father. Coming across the parking lot from a neighboring store, comes another client. He pulls in and parks. What I find odd is the vehicle.

A John Deere Riding Mower! He’s driving this thing, in the middle of town, through acres and acres of pavement! The nearest visible patch of grass was the size of an average storage closet.

I can think of some rational reasons for this, but I’d rather be amused.

Going away for vacation. Be back in a week.

redesign, cont’d

June 16th, 2004

Well, I’ve fixed the comments, partially. You can enter comments, and it will email them to me. What won’t happen is you seeing your comment on the page here.

It seems there are still some issues to work out in making Wordpress behave ideally. It would be just fine if I used the default settings, but no, I have to be fancy.

The reason I’m being fancy is for consistency. I’ve converted the backend of this site from Movable Type to Wordpress. If I can make things happen right, nobody will notice the change. All the links people have saved will still work, and all the pages will still be at the same addresses. To do that, I’ve used the time ( as the address for each individual entry. Wordpress doesn’t like that (yet). If I don’t use the title or the id number for the entry, it won’t display the comments.

Well, the house purchase is still in progress. We’ve worked out a deal with another bank, and another insurance company. It’s going to cost us more money up front, to get a loan for this “fixer-upper”, that we were hoping, but we’ve made it. Ideally, we’ll be closing the deal around the end of June. Things have been crazy-busy, and look to continue that way.

A word of advice to others (and myself):
Use local companies. They’re much easier to deal with when exceptions come up. They’ll work with you to find a solution, rather than just cutting you loose.

This is not only a redesign, this is a complete rebuild. Gone is Movable Type, here is Wordpress. It’s a new site, built from the ground up. I’ve imported all the old entries and been able to keep the link locations as they were. The category pages are different, but the individual page links are the same.

Movable Type somehow broke on me, and would give errors every time I made a new post or comment or update. I had been thinking of trying out something new, and this just kicked me into gear to get it done. This new system is not quite perfect yet, but I can tell make new entries to let you know what’s happening.

Update: It seems the monthly archives don’t work. Working on it…
‘nother update: Comments don’t work either. For now, use the gmail link above.
